Meet the Council
Mayor Joan Dickau
Bentley has been my home for over thirty years. My husband, Derek, and I have raised our four children here and three of them still call Bentley home.
This is my second term as Mayor and I continue to enjoy the challenges I am faced with. Resident safety and steady growth remain as two of my priorities. It is encouraging to see the new homes and businesses being built here and hope this trend continues as more people discover what a great community we have.
I am interested in hearing if you have any concerns, questions, or just want to relay a good news story.

I am presently appointed to the following committees:

I would like to see positive growth in both residential and business development for our Town without increasing taxes. Encouraging social programs and community resources towards making this great Town of Bentley even better!

Deputy Mayor Sandra Smyth
My name is Sandra Smyth and I have lived in Bentley since July 2006. My husband and I drove through and around Bentley about 4 years ago and really liked what we saw. When we decided to leave the Kananaskis area, this is where we chose to settle. We have been very happy here and enjoy the Town and the people very much. I work part time in the accounting field here in Bentley and that has given me the opportunity to meet more people and get a feel for the type of economy that is here. I served on Council for the Kananaskis Improvement District for several years, serving as chairperson for the last 3 years. I have always been interested in the governance of the Town and feel that I bring experience, leadership and a new vision to the Town of Bentley.
I am presently appointed to the following committees:
- Parkland Regional Library Board
- Bentley Municipal Library Board
- Municipal Planning Commission
Subdivision and Appeal Board
I look forward to any comments or discussion regarding any of these areas.
Councillor Robin Lemay
I have lived in Bentley for the past twelve years and love living here. I have two grown children. I have worked in the health care field for twenty years. It was a natural progression for me to run for Council as I have always been political and thought that I could contribute something positive to the community. Slow, steady growth in residential and business is what I would like to see for Bentley. With that growth, we could see an expansion in services and recreation without an increase in taxes.

Councillor Greg Rathjen
I am married to Janet and have two grown boys. I am originally from British Columbia and moved to Bentley in 1987 to take the ministry position at the Community Church. I was elected to Council in 2004.
My plan is to promote communication between Council and the community and to create interest in Bentley as the "hidden gem in Alberta". By listening to people and their concerns, we can become the most user friendly community in Alberta.
I am involved in the community through support groups, working with the Agricultural Society, Family and Community Support Services, Ministerial work, School programs as well as promotion and supporting community events. I am looking forward to the great future of our community.
I am Council Representative on the Public Works Committee, Parkland Community Planning Services, and the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board.

Would you like to address Council but are unsure of the procedure? The following guidelines are provided to help you.
Contact the municipal office, either by telephone, fax or e-mail, indicating the topic you wish to discuss with Council. Once you have made your request to attend as a delegation, you will be advised of the date and time of your appointment at a Council meeting.
Any documents you have that will aid Council in making informed decisions would be appreciated. These should be left at the municipal office the week prior to your meeting with Council so that copies can be made for the agenda packages.
At the meeting you attend, Council members will listen to your presentation and ask any questions of you to help them clearly understand. A decision will not be made at that meeting but will be added to the next agenda. This is to give administration sufficient time to research, if necessary. |
